The latter allows the combination of push-pull optical pumping (PPOP) and a temporal Ramsey-like pulsed interrogation. An originality of the optics package is the use of a single Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator (MZ EOM) both for optical sidebands generation and light switch for pulsed interaction. Typical Ramsey fringes with a linewidth of 166 Hz and a contrast of 33 \% are detected in a cm-scale buffer-gas filled Cs vapor cell. This technique could be interesting for the development of high-performance and low power consumption compact vapor cell clocks based on CPT.},

Since the proposal of chip-scale atomic clocks (CSACs) in 2002, the fields of MEMS-based atomic sensors and coherent population trapping (CPT) spectroscopy have progressed rapidly. This review gives an overview over microfabrication techniques used for CSACs, the fabrication and integration of the critical components. Furthermore, the performance of MEMS clocks is evaluated in terms of frequency stability and sensitivity to external parameters, size, and power consumption. Possibilities for reaching the final goal of a MEMS clock with a fractional frequency instability below 10-11 at 1 hour of integration in a package of volume of 1 cm3, consuming 30 mW of power, are discussed. Finally, a broad field of advances spectroscopic techniques is reviewed and their advantages and drawbacks for the improvement of chip-scale atomic clocks.},

+abstract = {We demonstrate a microfabricated atomic clock physics package based on coherent population trapping (CPT) on the D1 line of 87Rb atoms. The package occupies a volume of 12 mm3 and requires 195 mW of power to operate at an ambient temperature of 200 {\textdegree}C. Compared to a previous microfabricated clock exciting the D2 transition in Cs \[1\], this 87Rb clock shows significantly improved short- and long-term stability. The instability at short times is 4{\texttimes}10-11/$\tau$1/2 and the improvement over the Cs device is due mainly to an increase in resonance amplitude. At longer times ($\tau$\>50 s), the improvement results from the reduction of a slow drift to -5{\texttimes}10-9/day. The drift is most likely caused by a chemical reaction of nitrogen and barium inside the cell. When probing the atoms on the D1 line, spin-exchange collisions between Rb atoms and optical pumping appear to have increased importance compared to the D2 line.},

+abstract = {We demonstrate that optical pumping plays a significant role in determining the noise in certain types of laser-pumped vapor-cell microwave frequency standards by changing the way in which the laser's FM noise is converted to AM noise by the optical-absorption profile. When this FM--AM conversion is the dominant noise source, the noise spectrum of the transmitted intensity can be dramatically altered by the optical-pumping process. FM noise at Fourier frequencies larger than the optical-pumping time is converted to AM noise differently from noise at lower Fourier frequencies. This effect can modify the optimum design of vapor-cell frequency references and adds an additional FM--AM-related noise source that cannot be eliminated with laser tuning.},
